Hints for searching

Boolean Operators AND, OR, NOT

When you use the Simple Search, all terms are combined by AND automatically. For a more tightly focused search you may use the Boolean Operators to combine different search terms.

AND: The document has to contain all search terms.

OR: The document has to contain one of the search terms. This function broadens your search and is recommended, when there are different terms for the same meaning.

article OR paper

NOT: This function works excluding and might be useful to reduce a large result list: Documents, which contain the one term, may not contain the other.

article NOT paper

The Boolean Operators work for the Advanced Search as well. You may use them to combine different search terms within one search field. For example, to search for documents of the author "Doe" in the years 2002 or 2003, use the query:

Author: Doe
Year: 2002 OR 2003

Wildcards

In the field 'Search:', you may use the symbols '*' and '?' as wildcards. Use them in place of a character or characters that are unknown or that may differ. You cannot use them in front of a word or search string.

Example 1: chemi* finds chemical but also chemistry or chemist. Example 2: licen?e finds licence and license.

You may use double quotes (") to search for phrases.

How do I publish my work here?
Please click on the publication link on the start page.
First you are requested to choose a document type. Right beneath that you can upload your document files. Having done so you may click on "send". What follows now is the actual form. You have to fill in data about your publication here (so called metadata), which is used to describe your work in cataloges and other bibliographic directories. Describe the document you want to upload using the categories and fields on the publication form. Depending on the document type, some of these fields are mandatory and therefore have to be filled in. Please describe your document as clear as possible. Mandatory fields are for example:
  • the document type (must be choosen from a list)
  • the title of your publication and the language of the title
  • the abstract of the document
  • the publication date of your document (normally the day you publish it online)
  • the language of the document (must be choosen from a list)
  • the licence, under which you want to publish your document (must be choosen from a list)
If you are unsure what to fill in certain form fields, you can point the cursor on a field and an explaining help text will be shown.
After you have finished the form, all data will be displayed once again for a check-up and you then have three possibilities: you can correct them if necessary, add your document to a collection or simply safe it directly.

Note:
In oder to publish your work cookies have to be enabled in your web browser.
What's metadata?
Metadata can be defined as
  • data describing one or more resources or as
  • data associated with an object and describing it
Basically metadata is describing documents, objects or services and contains information about their content, structure or form. More abstractly metadata is a description of data or "data about data". Bibliographic data sets and catalog entries in library catalogs can be seen as a kind of metadata.

This repository is using metadata in the Dublin Core Metadata Element Set (short Dublin Core (DC)) which has fifteen basic elements. Dublin Core is the result of international efforts to reach a collective consensus in describing electronic objects (in the broadest sense). The Library of Congress (LoC), the Online Cataloging Library Center (OCLC) and several national libraries are dealing with Dublin Core in many projects and are close to introduce the system respectively.

In most cases this is no problem. Please ensure in any case, if your publisher allows a parallel publication! To do that you can use the SHERPA/ROMEO list.
Authors can choose which terms of use must be regarded for their publication. These terms are defined in a license. This repository supports different licenses, from which you can choose one (i.e. Creative Commons Licenses/).

Tasks and goals of the publication server Macromedia Publications

The university publication server Macromedia Publications is a platform for the electronic publication of documents that have been created in the context of research and teaching at the university and or are related to university life respectively. The documents are generally made freely accessible on the Internet.

The electronic documents are given permanent addresses and are indexed via national and international library catalogs, search engines, and other reference tools. Long-term archiving is planned.

Rights and obligations of the contractual parties

With the initial publication via Macromedia Publications, the university is only granted the non-exclusive right of publication on the Internet. On the part of the university, a second publication with a publisher is therefore possible. In accordance with the recommendations of the German Council of Science and Humanities, all authors are urged to secure a corresponding further right of use when concluding publishing agreements and to additionally publish the documents they have written - eventually after a retention period - on the publication server.

Compliance with copyright and exploitation rights, the preservation of further rights, and responsibility for the content of the publication are the sole responsibility of the authors and the publishers. The University Library assumes no liability for the content of published documents or linked external sites.

The library is only granted a simple right of use. The copyright of the authors is preserved, so that publication via Macromedia Publications does not prevent further publication in journals, reference books or other servers.

All scholars at Macromedia University are advised, in accordance with the recommendations of the German Council of Science and Humanities on digital information provision by university libraries, to reserve the right to self-archive on the university publications server when concluding publishing agreements and to additionally publish the documents they have authored on the publications server - possibly only after a retention period has expired.

In the event of a violation of the rights of third parties, provisions of the guidelines or the publisher or author agreement, the Library of the Macromedia University of Applied Sciences is entitled to block or delete documents that have already been published. Only the full text of the document will be blocked or deleted; metadata and frontdoor will remain intact. The library notes a blocking or deletion in the metadata.

The electronic document

For the purposes of these guidelines, the term "electronic document" is understood to mean a document based on text, graphics, audio or video sequences, stored in digital form on a data carrier and distributed via computer networks.

An electronic document to be published through the Macromedia Publications server meets the following conditions:

1.It is intended for distribution to the public.

2.It does not represent a dynamic document. If changes are necessary, the modified electronic document will be uploaded as a new version.

3.It complies with the technical parameters specified by the university library and the technical operator. The following categories of electronic documents can be distributed via the university publication server:

a. Publications and publication series of the Macromedia University of Applied Sciences,

b. Publications and collective works edited by members of the Macromedia University of Applied Sciences, such as congress reports, research reports, journals (e-journals) or series of publications,

d. Documents written by students of the university, such as master's theses, bachelor's theses and student research papers, if the publication is based on a recommendation by the supervisor or another faculty member,

e. Open Access secondary publications of articles and publications that have already appeared, so-called postprints, as well as preprints of scientific publications that are still to be published elsewhere.

In exceptional cases, the dissemination of electronic documents can be limited in time or space, for example to the university's locations. The documents are indexed in terms of form and content by the authors themselves via the registration form. The content indexing is done via

-abstracts
-standardized keywords
-freely assignable keywords
-classification systems.

The findability of electronic documents increases with the number, precision and comprehensiveness of the methods chosen for content indexing.

Organizational regulations

1. the university publication server is operated by the Macromedia Library. Technical support for the server is therefore provided by the Macromedia Library.
2. electronic publication is free of charge for members and affiliates of the Macromedia University of Applied Sciences and is carried out by the Macromedia Library.
